The World Free Zones Organization (World FZO) successfully wrapped up its 10th Annual World Congress in Dubai, attended by over 2,000 participants from 136 countries. This milestone event coincided with the organization’s decade-long journey since its inception in Dubai, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai.

The congress, featuring high-level dialogues on the future of free zones, global trade, and emerging technologies, underscored the strategic importance of Dubai as a hub for global trade and investment. Over the past decade, World FZO has expanded its influence, growing from 14 founding members to a vast network of 1,600 members from 141 countries, supported by 12 regional offices and 42 national contact points. The congress marked both a reflective and forward-looking celebration of this growth, as well as a platform to set the stage for the next era of global trade.

Artificial Intelligence and Trade: A Transformative Meeting

The congress kicked off with a highly anticipated Ministerial Meeting, led by H.E. Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade. Alongside government leaders from 24 nations, discussions centered on the future role of artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies in transforming global trade. The focus was on harnessing these advancements to enhance supply chain resilience, stimulate investment, and promote sustainable development.

Dr. Al Zeyoudi emphasized that the global trade landscape is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by the digitization of commerce and supply chains. “Technology, especially AI, is transcending boundaries and reshaping global trade,” he remarked. “The UAE, strategically positioned as a global trade leader, adopts a neutral stance that balances trade and diplomacy while forging international partnerships through comprehensive economic agreements (CEPAs).”

Amid the growing complexity of global trade, leaders at the meeting acknowledged the challenges posed by trade disruptions, crises, and protectionist policies. However, they also highlighted the opportunities created by technological progress, particularly AI, in addressing these hurdles and driving new growth avenues.

H.E. Dr. Mohammed Al Zarooni, Chairman of the World Free Zones Organization, reflected on the organization’s journey over the past decade, which began with a vision endorsed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. He noted that the World FZO has evolved into a pivotal platform, elevating the performance of free zones worldwide and supporting one-third of global trade flows through modern economic zones.

“This year’s congress not only marks our tenth anniversary but also heralds the beginning of a future focused on innovation and development,” Al Zarooni stated. “Our new corporate identity, launched during the congress, embodies our commitment to driving sustainable development through the strategic pillars of Impact, Influence, and Trust.”

Sessions at the congress explored future trends across key industries, such as logistics, energy, digital trade, and manufacturing. The discussions highlighted the critical role free zones will continue to play in shaping global economic growth, with a renewed emphasis on fostering innovation and investment in sectors aligned with the Fourth Industrial Revolution and AI.

Key Sector Insights: Logistics, Finance, Energy, and Manufacturing

The plenary sessions at the congress addressed several vital sectors, including logistics, access to finance, energy, and manufacturing. In the “Future of Logistics” session, speakers discussed how automation, the Internet of Things (IoT), and AI are enhancing efficiency in logistics hubs such as ports and airports. The UAE’s leadership in adopting green economy regulations and carbon reduction strategies was also emphasized, particularly in relation to public-private partnerships for sustainable logistics technologies.

The “Future of Access to Finance” session examined how free zones are regionalizing supply chains and creating new job opportunities. Participants stressed the critical need for enhanced access to finance to attract foreign direct investment (FDI), particularly in emerging markets such as Asia and Latin America.

Meanwhile, the “Future of Energy” session highlighted the strategic role free zones play in global energy markets, showcasing the UAE’s leadership in renewable energy. AI’s transformative potential in energy management was also discussed as a way to optimize efficiency and sustainability. Additionally, the “Future of Manufacturing” session focused on the need for a balance between formal education and vocational training to address labor shortages and support economic growth in free zones.

Strengthening Global Trade Partnerships: AfCFTA Collaboration

In a significant development during the congress, the World FZO signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). This agreement aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation in policy development, capacity building, and investment promotion across Africa’s free zones. Both parties committed to working together on harmonizing regulations and creating a conducive business environment within African free zones. The MoU also facilitates the organization of trade missions, investment forums, and the exchange of best practices. This collaboration underscores the growing importance of free zones in supporting Africa’s economic integration and positioning the continent as a key player in global trade.

A New Corporate Identity: Charting the Future

The 10th World Congress also witnessed the launch of World FZO’s new corporate identity, symbolizing the organization’s forward-looking strategy. The updated mission and vision underscore its focus on opening new investment horizons, supporting global net-zero initiatives, and fostering collaboration within the global free zone ecosystem. By leveraging its expertise in learning, communication, and consultation, the World FZO aims to drive positive change across global free zones and expand its influence in shaping the future of international trade.

Conclusion

The success of the World FZO’s 10th Annual World Congress reflects the UAE’s visionary leadership in fostering global trade partnerships and shaping the future of free zones. With discussions focused on AI, sustainability, and economic transformation, the congress served as a timely platform for global leaders to chart a course for the next decade of trade and development. As free zones continue to evolve, the role of technology, innovation, and collaboration will be central to navigating the challenges and opportunities of the global economy.
